About the Program

World Trade Day 2009, Trade in Turbulent Times: Great Challenge Brings Great Opportunity, provided an opportunity to meet and hear from experienced international executives who have successfully led their businesses in the global marketplace during these difficult times. Despite the many uncertainties around the world, international business remains an important part of the Colorado and global economy. For 29 years, World Trade Day has been the signature educational and networking event for businesses and individuals engaged in international trade. World Trade Day again showcased the diversity and range of Colorado's international players. From the sporting goods industry, to the software and bioscience industries - to service providers that support the intricacies of international trade, World Trade Day 2009 exemplifies the varied faces that make up Colorado's international business community.

This year, we welcomed Thomas Hoenig, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, as our breakfast keynote speaker. Mr. Hoenig provided insight into the global financial crisis and the outlook for the U.S. economy. Following Mr. Hoenig, was Lieutenant Governor Barbara O'Brien who shared her thoughts and insight into how and why international trade continues to play a growing role in Colorado's economy. The Lieutenant Governor also recognized the winners of the 2009 Governor's Awards for Excellence in Exporting.

The conference portion of World Trade Day 2009 focused on key industry clusters that are driving Colorado's economy. Industry clusters are critical to an economic base, making them primary targets for economic development, retention and expansion efforts. In a report published by the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation, leading industry clusters are discussed. This report, combined with Colorado state export data, encouraged us to focus this year's World Trade Day on:

  • The Entrepreneurial Outdoor Products Industry;
  • The Aviation Industry: Turbulence Ahead?;
  • The New Energy Economy;
  • Exporting Professional Services;
  • Colorado's Software & HighTech Industry:
    Leaders in International Innovation;
  • imgwtd17
  • Colorado's Thriving BioScience Industry;
  • Going Global with Cleantech;
  • Colorado's Beverage Industry - Quenching the World's Thirst; and
  • The Global Economic Slump - Is the End in Sight?

Our luncheon program featured KieAnn Brownell, President of the Metro Denver Sport Commission who provided an update on the recent Sportaccord gathering in Denver and the important business of international sports. This was the first time Sportaccord was held in the Americas, placing Denver once again in the international spotlight.

ABOUT OUR PANELS

Session I Panels - 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.

Panel A: 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. - Colorado's Thriving BioScience Industry: Colorado's bioscience industry has become one of the most exciting and advanced industry clusters in the country. Nearly three hundred and eighty bioscience companies, including leaders such as Sandhill Scientific and Inviragen make their home under the gaze of the Rocky Mountains. The state is home to a thriving industry, comprised of biotechnology, medical device, pharmaceutical, health care providers, research institutions and those businesses that provide critical services and products to bioscience companies. These companies are conducting cutting edge research to find cures to diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and infectious diseases; improve agricultural yields; and develop cleaner, more efficient manufacturing methods. The pipeline of new technologies and new companies coming out of Colorado's research institutions is strong and the number of Colorado bioscience businesses and their employees are growing faster than the national average.

Panel B: 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. - Colorado's Entrepreneurial Outdoor Industry Colorado's sunny and temperate climate makes the state a magnet for year-round outdoor recreation and a leader in outdoor product development. Headquartered in Boulder, Colorado, the Outdoor Industry Association reports that only pharmaceutical and automobile manufacturing generate more sales in the U.S. than outdoor recreation. And in Colorado, the industry continues to grow every year. That growth in outdoor recreation translates into jobs, retail sales and augmented tax revenue. Entrepreneurial Colorado companies like GoLite and Icelantic Boards are leading the way in the outdoor products industry and setting the pace for the rest of the world.

Panel C: 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. - Exporting Professional Services: Colorado companies are recognized the world over as being leaders in the exportation of professional services. From architectural firms to telecommunications to engineering services, Colorado companies touch every corner of the global. Uniquely qualified to discuss the challenges and opportunities to be met in exporting professional services are our panelists from CH2MHill and Gensler. Join us to learn more about their international projects, the ups and downs of exporting professional services and their insight into the outlook for the professional services market.

Session II Panels - 10:15 a.m. - 11:15 a.m.

Panel A: 10:15 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. - Colorado's New Energy Economy: Governor Ritter's New Energy Economy is leading Colorado forward by establishing the state as a national and international leader in the production and manufacturing of clean modern energy technologies. The New Energy Economy is securing our energy, economic and environmental future. Green development and sustainable designs are increasingly a component of doing business in Colorado and throughout the world. Companies are looking for ways to incorporate green practices into their operations and are committing to a “triple bottom line,” focusing on the benefits of economic growth, social equity, and environmental stewardship. Join us to hear from some of the leaders like Diamond Wire Technologies, Digital Energy Foundation and LanzaTech and how they are working to act as new energy leaders in the global marketplace.

Panel B: 10:15 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. - Colorado's Beverage Industry: Quenching the World's Thirst: In recent years, consumer trends have increased the demand for specialty beverages, particularly in the alcohol sector of the beverage industry. Leaders from Left Hand Brewing, Cooper Tea and Stranahans Whiskey will share their global outlook - why they "went international," how they are responding to increased global demand and the international opportunities and challenges that are helping form their global strategies.

Panel C: 10:15 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. - Colorado's Software and HighTech Industry: Leaders in International Innovation As the Silicone Valley of the Rocky Mountains, Colorado has the third largest technology labor market in the country. According to the Metro Denver EDC report, the region's information technology-software industry employs 42,320 people. This large concentration of innovation and talent is due in part to Colorado's highly educated population, favorable tax and regulatory environment, and relatively low cost of doing business. IT leaders from Google and IBM will share their international outlook and their thoughts on the ever changing demands of working in the global IT and software industries.

Session III Panels - 11:20 a.m. - 12:20 p.m.

Panel A: 11:20 a.m. - 12:20 p.m. - Going Global with Cleantech Clean technology - a response to the global environmental and natural resource constraints of the 21st Century - represents one of our nation's greatest challenges and opportunities. Clean technology encompasses technological innovations in everything from renewable energy to sustainable building. The sector also includes products and technologies from companies such as GeoTech Environmental, Coolerado and Spirae that help consumers and industries use natural resources such as energy, water and waste more efficiently. The cleantech movement intends to create economic growth and new jobs in a sector where Colorado is seen to have significant competitive potential on the international stage.

Panel B: 11:20 a.m. - 12:20 p.m. - The Global Economic Slump - Is the End in Sight? One of World Trade Day 2008's most popular speakers, Gabriel de Kock, will provide insight on the global financial crisis from the standpoint of one of the world's largest banks, JPMorgan Chase & Co.

Panel C: 11:20 a.m. - 12:20 p.m. - The Aviation Industry: Turbulence Ahead? Colorado is home to one of strongest aviation economies in the United States and is ranked 12th among the nation's 50 largest metro areas for aviation employment concentration. Denver International Airport was the nation's fifth-busiest airport in the nation and the 10th-busiest in the world in 2008. DIA features North America's longest commercial runway; thus augmenting potential for expanding international markets and further connecting Colorado to the global market. The aviation industry cluster includes companies that manufacture aircraft and provide air transportation services. According to the Metro Denver EDC report, more than 800 businesses statewide are involved in the aviation industry. Aviation leaders such as Jeppesen call Colorado home and enjoy the concentration of aviation-related companies devoted to geospatial technology, remote sensing, and imaging technology.
